A Proud Legacy: 150 Years of Service

In 2022, the West Sand Lake Volunteer Fire Department proudly marked its 150th anniversary of serving the Town of Sand Lake. Established as the third rural volunteer fire company in Rensselaer County and the first in our town, our history is rich and deeply rooted in the desire to protect our community.

The origins of our fire department can be traced back to mill owner John McLaren, who recognized the urgent need for fire protection in the area. In the 1870s, dedicated volunteers formed the fire company, primarily to safeguard the local mills and homes. Initially relying on “bucket brigades,” these early members worked tirelessly until they could raise enough funds to acquire their first piece of fire apparatus, affectionately named “Old Joe,” which has been preserved and is currently displayed in the museum section of our fire hall.

About Our District

The West Sand Lake Fire Department serves a fire district encompassing over 10 square miles, covering both rural and suburban areas in Rensselaer County. This district includes over 5,000 residents, reflecting a diverse demographic comprised of families, retirees, and individuals who all contribute to the vibrant culture of our community. Our commitment is to ensure their safety and well-being through prompt and professional emergency response services.
